3rd Feb 2010
Visitors to Leicester city centre this weekend will be able to enjoy Leicester Comedy Festival as it hits the big screen located in the middle of the city.
The festival has worked with BBC Big Screens to introduce a unique piece of interactive public art to celebrate the opening weekend of Leicester Comedy Festival 2010. Titled “Hand From Above” the animation seems to intervene whenever it pleases, picking up members of the public like tiny toys, tickling them around or squashing them.
The playful animation has previously been seen in cities around the UK but this is the first visit to an East Midlands city. A short film of the artwork can be seen at http://vimeo.com/7042266
The animation will be on the BBC Big Screen, Leicester city centre on Saturday 6th February from 12-3pm.
Leicester Comedy Festival is the longest running comedy festival in Europe and starts on Friday 5th February. The festival programme is not just limited to stand-up and includes dance performances, music gigs, workshops and seminars. This is the first year Leicester Comedy Festival has worked with BBC Big Screens.
The animation was created by artist Chris O’Shea who was inspired by TV show “Land of the Giants”. Speaking about the animation, Chris say’s “as a child I would daydream about running around as a tiny person, climbing over things and avoiding being squashed by big people… I was interested in how I could get this feeling of being a small person in a giants’ world on to a big screen.”
